Stanley ultimately did find Dr Livingstone, on November 10 1871 at Ujiji, near Lake Tanganyika in today’s Tanzania. Stanley wore this type of hat, called a sola topi, in photographs to promote his articles about Livingstone. He started a trend among fellow Europeans for wearing hats of this design when they went to hotter places.
